There are a lot of food-adjacent businesses in West Virginia that deserve some attention. While they may not be restaurants, these businesses grow food, create food, produce food and more.
So, this is an odds & ends post - a goulash, if you will - of farms, small businesses, cottage bakeries, singular products and more that I've come across in the past year or so that I wanted to document in one way or another.

Finally, WV Grown Members, Farms & Other Food Producers: Amandus Family Farm - Amandus Family Farm is a small family operation farm in Ona, WV that focuses on pasture and wood raised pork, chicken and chicken eggs. The regenerative farming practices give their animals the best life possible which gives our customers the best product possible!
American Pie - American Pie, LLC is a small, family-owned, family-run business located in Moundsville. Their pies are made from scratch using fresh, local ingredients. They pride themselves on delicious fillings and crust that contains no preservatives.
Anderson Hollow - Anderson Hollow does things the old-fashioned way! Their handcrafted goat milk soap is cold processed. You’ll find ingredients like oatmeal, crushed lavender and herbs in their soaps. But the number one ingredient is goat milk from the farm.
Angela's Ark - On a quaint little family farm, Angel Larman and her husband Jason raise chickens and ducks. In 2024, they will be adding geese to their flock. They will also start breeding sheep next year. They have several females and recently added a male.
Appalachian Abattoir - Appalachian Abattoir is a sister company to Buzz Foods. For years, their customers wanted to purchase local meat, so they opened Appalachian Abattoir in 2021. It’s the only USDA inspected and USDA graded meat processing and packaging facility in West Virginia. They offer wholesale opportunities and service work. Their mission is to provide the highest quality products with the highest level of service.
Appalachian Acres Inc. - Owner Don Tenney has been operating greenhouses since he was a teenager, growing vegetable, plants and selling to a local hardware store. Tenney’s main emphasis is growing lettuce for local restaurants and a full assortment of high tunnel and field produce for local farmers markets and farm to school programs. They also produce maple syrup in the spring and sorghum (molasses) in the fall, which is supplied to Tamarack and local markets. They are developing pop-up markets.
Appalachian Apiculture - Appalachian Apiculture prides itself on its sustainable beekeeping practices. It’s a small beekeeping operation that harvests its honey in and around Huntington. Depending on the time of year, you can purchase seasonal varieties of honey.
Appalachian Botanical Co., LLC - Founded in 2018, Appalachian Botanical Co. grows lavender and raises bees on reclaimed coal mine land in Boone County. Their mission is to put the land and people of West Virginia back to work. They’re proud that 90% of their workers are from Boone Co. Their aromatherapy, body care products and culinary products are GMO and pesticide-free. They contain flowers, leaves, buds and stems from lavender harvested at their Ashford farm. Their honey is produced by bees that forage in their lavender fields.
Appalachian Greens - Appalachian Greens was established in 2020 with the goal of offering flavorful alternatives to mainstream, leafy vegetables and herbs. They produce seasonal, high-quality microgreens, shoots and herbs grown from heirloom seeds and sourced from all around the world. Available in retail and wholesale amounts, their plants are grown year-round.
Appalachian Lavender - Welcome to Appalachian Lavender! We're a woman owned, family ran business working to reclaim abandon mine land and turn them into Lavender Farms and provide the community with exceptional lavender products. We offer a wide variety of products from hydrosols, beauty sprays or calming mists. Love spending time in the kitchen? We have culinary lavender for sweet and savory dishes. Maybe you're not a chef or baker but perhaps a mixologist. We offer a simple syrup kit that makes 12 fl oz of syrup. Impress your friends with a lavender cocktail or mocktail. Appalachian Orchard Company - Appalachian Orchard Company is a family run business that is steeped in history and tradition with an updated face and a young progressive management team
Appalachian Tradition - It’s all about preserving the past at Appalachian Tradition. Samantha McBride has been canning and preserving fruits since she was a little girl. “It is something I love to do. Canning is becoming a lost art, and I hope to pass it along to my children.” She makes fruit preserves, jams, jellies and butters from local produce, with no artificial additives, colors or dyes. Appalachian Tradition goods have a two-year shelf life and can be kept refrigerated for up to three months after opening.
Appalachian Willows & Brooms - Abbie and Don Wiles have a small family farm in Palestine, WV. They began their farming journey in 2016, planting 375 shrub willows as a test crop. The willows flourished and so has their business. They now have approximately 13,000 bushes, which are harvested each winter for basket willow stems. Much of the harvest is sold to professional weavers, they keep some to weave their traditional willow baskets.

Black Oak Holler Farm - Black Oak Holler Farm is a free-range, forest-fed hog operation in Mason Co. The hogs feast on millet, sorghum-sudan grass, barley and rapeseed. Owner Chuck Talbott uses feral genetics to create a high-quality pork product. It takes a year to produce a 350-pound pig ready for harvest, but Chuck says it’s worth the wait!
Blackthorn Estates Nursery - Leonard and Trish Upton both hail from small family farms. They opened their Christmas Tree and lavender business in 2015 as a retirement venture. They enjoy working with environmentally friendly and sustainable crops and propagate 15 varieties of lavender, concentrating on more unique species. The lavender they grow is used in multiple types of products.
Blessed-Full Farm - We sell a variety of goat milk soaps, produce, and hand crafted items. Operating under WV cottage law
Blueberry Ridge Farms Fairmont - Locally owned, chemical-free U-Pick Farm located at the top of Bunner Ridge in Fairmont, WV. We are the only organically grown U-pick blueberry farm in the area.
Bob's American Store & Cafe - Bob's American Store & Cafe located in Shady Spring, WV, provides a variety of local, American-made goods. The cafe is open everyday but Saturday.
Boggess Farms - Obediah Harrison and Malinda Parsons Harrison purchased 62 acres in Given back in 1912. It’s the same land their descendants, Pat and Leslie Boggess, farm today. Boggess Farms has dabbled in hogs, sheep and goats but cattle is their love. Mainly an Angus operation, the Boggess’ raise fall and winter calves to sell.
Bolyard Farms, LLC dba Hillbilly Essentials, LLC
Branch and Root Forest Farm, LLC - Branch and Root Forest Farm is owned and operated by veteran, Todd and wife Marlana. Their small-scale forest farm grows atrisk forest medicinals, ramps, mushrooms and heirloom culinary plants. All of their products are made in small batches and feature botanicals they have harvested sustainably with their own hands.
Brandywine Berry Company - Offering farm fresh duck eggs, fresh cut flowers & herbs, hand-poured candles, and stawberries.
Brightside Acres, LLC - Brightside Acres is located in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, in the heart of the Monongahela National Forest. At 4,000 feet and miles from a paved road, it’s a place where electricity comes from the sun and water from a spring. A place where days are filled with the cries of pileated woodpeckers and red-tailed hawks and nights with the songs of owls and coyotes. A place where the seasons have distinct personalities, colors, scents, and flavors.
Brown Mountain Farm - Brown Montain Farm is a family owned farm deep in the heart of West Virginia.
Brown's Choose and Cut Christmas Tree Farm - There’s no better smell than a fresh-cut conifer at Christmas. At Brown’s, they know their trees. They’ve been in business for more than 20 years. When you visit the farm, you get to choose and then cut your pick of the trees. Conveniently located near the I-79/I-68 interchange, customers come from as far away as Maryland and Pennsylvania to take home a tree. Call ahead for days and hours of operation.
Brushy Mountain Tree Farm - The Heavner family started their tree farm in 2006, and it was a true family endeavor. Everyone pitched in to plant eight acres of trees. Their goal is to provide quality trees and wreaths for their community. You can find Norway Spruce, Douglas Fir, Concolor Fir, Fraser Fir and Colorado Blue Spruce at their choose and cut operation near Franklin.

Budding Wheeling - Budding Wheeling is a youth entrepreneurship program that teaches young people in Wheeling about building a small business through running a flower farm and farm stand. Budding Wheeling sells locally grown dry and fresh flower bouquets in the Wheeling area.
Buena Vista Farm - Buena Vista Farm is a West Virginia Century Farm known for “corn, cattle and kids.” The operation started in 2012 with farmfresh strawberries and picked-from-the-garden produce. They’ve expanded their offerings in the years since and take great pride in using natural practices.

Dean's Gap Farm, LLC - Dean's Gap Farm was established in 2015 by Scott and Becky Rightsell. Both grew up on small family farms where they learned about animal husbandry, gardening and canning. The farm itself was passed down to them by Becky’s parents. The farm is a antibiotic-free turkey operation. In 2018, they added a high tunnel and now grow vegetables year-round. In their spare time, you can find them beside their smoker, smoking a variety of meats for catering and vendor events.
Deep Mountain Farm - Deep Mountain Farm's mission is to provide its community with locally produced, clean food with a focus on regenerative and organic practices.
Dolar Rancho High Tunnel - Dolar Rancho High Tunnel is based in Webster Springs, WV. They primarily grow and sell produce.
Dovetail Ridge Farm - Dovetail Ridge Farm is a 60-acre, USDA certified, organic homestead on Peters Mountain in Monroe County. Owners Joe and Loria Chasnoff say they are blessed with rich topsoil and a climate well suited to growing organic hemp. They have never used chemical fertilizer or spray. The Chasnoff’s say their products can relieve pain, calm anxiety, aid sleep, improve appetite and boost the immune system.
Dry Creek Farms - Dry Creek is a small, family-owned farm that grows industrial hemp. Disabled veteran Dr. Lynell Braught created a special way of growing, processing and extracting the CBD oil out of the plant. “We make sure every step of the way is as natural and pure as possible. Even our fertilizers are totally natural,” explains Braught. “We do not wish to be a big company; we just strive to be the best!”

Farm One-Eleven - Farm One-Eleven is a first-generation, family farm in Wheeling. They got their start in 2015 after watching a documentary on food processing. They wanted to know where their food was coming from, and they want their customers to know that, too. Farm One-Eleven focuses on forest/pasture-raised Berkshire pork, pasture non-GMO chicken, fresh eggs and seasonal scratch-bakes. They use rotational grazing to prevent parasites.

FernFaye Farm - FernFaye Farm is a small, family-owned farm in Marion County. They grow cut flowers for you-pick events as well as weddings, showers, private bookings and a variety of other occasions. They offer farm classes for children and are available for use as a photography venue.
Five Springs Farm & Five Springs Farm Guesthouse - Pamela Bailey runs what she calls a “one-woman show.” Her farm covers 171 acres near the New River Gorge in Fayette County. She raises grass-fed beef cattle and a flock of Katahdin sheep. Her high tunnel and gardens are filled with more than 20 different types of greens that she mixes into bags she sells at the local famers market. The farm also includes a restored 1850s farmhouse which she runs as an Airbnb so guests can watch how a real farm operates.
Five Star Beef Co. - Five Star Beef Co. offers fresh, all natural beef that was born and raised in Ritchie County. It is pasture raised and grain finished to ensure a delicious product.
Floral Acres - Floral Acres U-Pick Blueberry Farm, is a u-pick blueberry farm open from late June till early August. Located in north central West Virginia.
Flower Therapy - "Flower Therapy started because I love flowers and feel joyful being with them" says owner, Sherry Mitchell. "I’ve grown flowers for years, but my present floral journey began in May 2020, when my mom passed away. I threw some seeds in the dirt to see if I could grow flowers in my West Virginia clay. I messaged all three florists in my town, offering to work for them and they taught me the trade. Now, I share my journey and talent with my community."

Good Time Ridge Farm - Harold and Cheri Seiler purchased 10 acres of land in West Virginia in 1986 as a retirement investment. Cheri fell in love with an alpaca she met at a local farm in 2008, and the rest is history. Nearly three decades later, they raise alpacas as well as Highland cattle, Kiko meat goats and miniature silky fainting goats. “The feeling of peace when working with the animals and all their different personalities is amazing,” says Cheri.

Graystone Acres - David and Hope Fluharty operate Graystone Acres with the help and guidance of David’s grandfather. The farm is located in the beautiful mountains of north-central West Virginia. Graystone Acres was established in 1968 by Tom Fluharty, David’s grandfather, in the same area that his family has been farming for ten generations. All their beef is grass-fed and pasture-raised. They believe in quality beef for their customers and the convenience of bringing it to your door.
Green Family Farm - The Green's started their family farm in 1976 as a way to give their three daughters some farm experience and improve their land by keeping it productive. Their ewes are pastured year-round (except during lambing season) and never receive antibiotics, growth hormones or other feed additives. Their loyal customer base goes back 20-plus years, and they say they consistently get rave reviews on the quality of their meat and chicken.

Hazel Dell Farm - Katie Fitzsimmons and her father raise beef on Hazel Dell Farm in West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle. The duo pride themselves on bringing local, farm-raised beef to their customers. Katie says, “We don’t sell anything that wouldn’t go on our table!”
Heavenly Hills Homestead - Heavenly Hills Homestead is a small farm operation. They grow a large garden every year as well as giant pumpkins and giant radishes. They also raise their own goats, pigs, rabbits, chickens, ducks and geese on their one acre of land.
Hestia's Way Acres - Hestia’s Way Acres is a small, family-owned farm in north central West Virginia. Bethany Glaspell began beekeeping in 2020 and discovered a myraid of uses for beeswax. The business sells everything from beeswax lip balms to lotion bars. The farm also makes jams and jellies using locally sourced fruit and offers homemade baked goods.
Hickory Ridge Farm and Show Lambs - This week, we're featuring Hickory Ridge Farm and Show Lambs. This 120-acre farm in Braxton and Nicholas Counties takes pride in their club lambs and farm fresh produce.

Higher Knowledge Farm, LLC - Higher Knowledge Farms, LLC is a third generation beef cattle farm located in Barbour County, WV. The farm keeps up with past traditions of raising high-quality, home-grown products for families while taking care of the land and the animals. The farm continues to expand with new additions and improvements to help with production and conservation of natural resources.

Hope's Harvest Farm - Calvin N. Hall III has been growing produce for his family at the farm since 1969. After retiring in 2015, they decided to expand their growing and take their maple syrup production to the next level. The Hall’s grow part of their produce in a 30x96 high tunnel. The rest is grown outside. On the farm, they utilize organic methods whenever possible and feed their family from the same produce they sell.

Seven Islands Farm - Seven Islands Farm is a sixth-generation operation located on the banks of the Cheat River in Tucker County. Sloping Acres - Sloping Acres is a small, urban farm. The operation is on less than an acre of land, but owner Donna Myles knows how to make the most out of small spaces. The farm features a small greenhouse and four small high tunnels. She also leases property from a neighbor for outdoor growing. Sloping Acres jams and jellies are made with fruit from their property and their black walnuts are sourced right from their back yard.
Soggy Bottom Farm & Nursery - Soggy Bottom Farm and Nursery is a Norway Spruce grower. They have sunflowers, pumpkins and broom corn. They also have beehives.
Sourwood Farms - Bill and Diana Bartley established Sourwood Farms in 2020 after working on their land for several years. They took their land which was purchased knowing it was an old strip mine and dump. They reclaimed the strip mine, cleaned up the dump and used their experience in farming and hard work to create their vision in turning the land into Sourwood Farms. Today the farm is thriving with an orchard, vegetable gardens and ponds.
South Branch Meat and Cattle Company - The Williams family has been farming in the South Branch Valley for nine generations. Owners Sam, Kelly and their four children are passionate about West Virginia and the surrounding communities of the Potomac Highlands and providing sustainable products. Sparks Hilltop Orchard - Sparks Hilltop Orchard, owned and operated by Dianna and Joe Sparks, of Duck, has been chosen as the 2017 Elk Conservation District farm. The Sparks’ use their 65 acre farm as an orchard and vegetable operation.
Spillman Mountain Farm Products, Inc. - Spillman Mountain Farm sells locally-raised and processed beef, pork, lamb and bison in Webster and Braxton Counties. They also sell locally made products from various WV counties.
Spring Creek Superior Meats, LLC - Kevin Mullens and his family started their business in 2020 during the pandemic when there was a demand for fresh, quality beef, pork and lamb. At first, the family was filling a lot of small orders. Over time, that has changed. Mullens stresses their steers, hogs and lambs are born and finished on the farm. They raise heritage hogs, Simmental and Angus steers and hair sheep.
Spruce Creek Farm - Spruce Creek Farm was founded in 2019 and added a high tunnel to increase production. That same year, their farm won the Guyan District Farm of the Year award. They enjoy offering healthier food choices to their community.

Stringtown Farm - Debbie Gue purchased the family farm in 2018. She started out with a small garden, and the business blossomed from there. She now grows her own vegetables and fruit and uses fresh-picked berries to make jellies and her own apples for apple butter. Her original goal was to provide a place where her grandkids could learn where food comes from, but the farm has grown into so much more. Debbie says, “The work is hard but so worth it!”
Struggling Acres Farm - Struggling Acres Farm was started in 2015. Their mission statement is, “It shouldn’t cost a fortune to eat.” They grow a large variety of produce both inside their high tunnels and in their fields. Most of their produce is grown as organically as possible. They have approximately 30 to 40 laying hens that produce our farm eggs.

The Grass is Greener Farm LLC - Owned by two cranky, disabled veterans who find peace, resiliency and happiness in farming. Owner Catherine Kemmerling believes everyone should eat as well as she does and is hell-bent on keeping their small, regenerative, family farm going to do so. “If you haven’t tried a heritage turkey, you’ve never had real turkey! Our Kunekune pigs are delicious, too,” she says.

Walking Wind Farm & Florist - They are a small farm that specializes in growing flowers for farmers markets and custom wedding work. They churn out a wide mix of flowers every week for their market customers to always have something new and evolving on their tables. Their season runs from May through December as they also run a line of fresh evergreen and dried flowers/seed pods for winter and Christmas decor.

Warbirds Cattle & Farm - The farm was established in 1947 by the current owner’s great-grandfather as a dairy farm. Warbirds Cattle & Farm is now a beef cattle operation run by its 4th and 5th generations. They raise registered British White cattle and Angus cattle for both commercial and local markets. The farm also has a vast hay operation. The owners believe in sustainable, diversified agriculture. The farm is veteran-owned, woman-owned, family-owned and Homegrown By Heroes certified!
Ware Farms - Fresh is always best! That’s the motto of Ware Farms. Once a tobacco operation, the owners turned to asparagus and other vegetables when the tobacco market took a dive 20 years ago. Most of their vegetables are grown in high tunnels.
Weese Farm dba WV Veggies & Blooms - John is a second-generation farmer on the family property in Fisher. He’s spent his life raising prime, quality, farm-fresh beef. His wife Michelle has created her own space on the farm growing vegetables in a high tunnel. In addition, they grow fresh-cut f lowers and operate a seasonal pumpkin patch and corn maze. The farm is also available as an intimate (50 person and under) wedding and party venue.

White's Creek Family Farm - White’s Creek Family Farm has been farming for generations. They decided to scale up their cattle operation and make their own brand. They now offer locally grown Angus/Limousin freezer beefs, American Wagyu freezer beefs and top tier Japanese Wagyu genetics. They are proud to grow the food that feeds your families.
White Oak Farm - White Oak Farm is owned and operated by Max and Anne Robinson. We planted our first blueberries in the fall of 1993 before our children were born. It was a cold day in October with snow on the ground when we set out our first plants, with the help of loyal friends. During the previous summer the soil was prepared to get ready for the acid loving blueberries.
Wild & Wonderful Homestead Elderberry Farm - What started with a memory of picking elderberries for syrup with her Dad in the U.K., this West Virginia transplant & her West Virginia native husband started their elderberry farm in Hampshire County. With help from their children, Ellen & William Mills grow, harvest, process & make all their products in small batches to bring you the freshest & very best elderberry jelly, syrup & teas.
Wildlee Made - We are a WV cottage bakery & welcome you to enjoy the comforting taste of homemade sourdough, baked goods, floral jellies, herbal teas, tinctures, and other folk remedies. All crafted with love & good intentions.
Wildmour Farm - We are a small family-run farm in Deer Run, West Virginia (just outside Franklin). We focus on growing our flowers and food as naturally as we can without harmful chemicals. We currently sell our products at the Pendleton County Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings from 9AM – 12PM.
Wilfong Farms - In operation since 1916, Wilfong Farms is a family owned farm in Pocahontas County. They raise 1,000 head of sheep, 800 brood cows and several hundred yearling cattle. They have diversified the farm by adding an agritourism component-CW's Corn Maze and a U-pick strawberry patch.
Wilkerson Christmas Tree Farm - Larry and Syble Wilkerson planted their first 3,000 Christmas trees back in 1971. The trees took several years to mature and the Wilkersons have been selling trees to visitors far and wide ever since. Customers come from out of state to choose and cut their tree. Along with their choose and cut operation, the Wilkersons make wreaths, door swags and hanging baskets. The operation opens every year on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving.
Williams Sweet Corn - The Williams family has been farming in the South Branch Valley for more than nine generations. Owners Sam, Kelly and their four children are passionate about West Virginia and providing locally grown produce. The family is proud to provide their nutritious and delicious, sweet corn to consumers and restaurants. Their produce is hand-picked daily to ensure freshness.
Williams River Farm - Located on the scenic Williams River in Webster County, the farm is a pick-your-own strawberry operation where they say their berries are second to none. They also offer fresh vegetables in season.
Windy Meadows Farm - Windy Meadows started out as a horse farm but has turned into much more. The farm now boasts a high tunnel, laying hens, an apple orchard, feeder cattle, pigs and goats. The owners’ grandchildren take pride in gathering and sorting the eggs. The profits from their hard work go right back into their savings accounts.
Willow Bourn Farms - Willow Bourn is a first-generation farm owned and operated by Kathryn Rowley and Benjamin Thompson. The farm was incorporated in 2020 as a small produce farm business to help bring food to their local community in the height of the pandemic. Now in their third season, they provide a wide and unique variety of produce and cottage goods to two local farmers markets. The farm’s mission is to grow what is best for their area and focus on seasonality and sustainability.
